In addition, NVCS currently has 26 Chinese (Mandarin) language teachers, 10 after-class activities & cultural instructors and 11 Teacher Assistants. We are very pleased that a slate of advisor including
Anne Chen, Robert Chen, Mike Chen, Alexander Chi, Tom McCarthy and Yeni Wong are also part of the NVCS team.
The school was founded in 1989 with the mission to provide a superb learning environment in Mandarin Chinese language and cultural for the next generation of ethnic Chinese families and non-Chinese community's members in the Northern Virginia area. The NVCS offers Mandarin Chinese language courses including Phonics Traditional (國字注音) & Pin-Yin Simplified ( 汉语拼音) for students ranging from Pre-K (age 3 & up) to 12th grade that focus on leadership and public speaking training. In addition, NVCS also offers Chinese conversation classes to non-Chinese-speaking youth and adult.
Currently, classes are held at the George Mason High School, located at 7124 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22043. All students are enrolled in fourteen levels of Chinese language classes during the hours from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sundays from September to June. NVCS is very proud to offer other elective cultural and athletic classes including Chinese folk dance (中國民族舞蹈), Tai-Chi (太極拳, 2:30 - 3:30 PM), Shaolin Temple WuShu (少林寺武术), Drawing/Painting (繪畫), and Tennis (網球) , and Zumba between the hours of 4:00 P.M.& 5:00 PM.
In addition to the weekly classes, the NVCS regularly sponsors various events within the school and participates in social events in the Washington Metropolitan Chinese School Association (WMCSA) and local communities. NVCS regular social activities include the traditional Autumn Moon Festival (中秋節), Halloween Parade (萬聖節遊行), Santa Visits NVCS (聖誕老人訪問), Chinese Lunar New Year Festival & Luncheon (農曆新年的慶祝午餐), and Mother's Day celebration. In terms of academic activities, the Chinese speech contest, the Chinese words contest, and the Teacher Day Celebration are three major events sponsored by the NVCS annually. Both the NVCS Chinese Folk Dance Team and Karate Team have been very popular and are routinely invited to perform in various community events with great appreciation from the hosts and audiences.
The NVCS strongly believes that the school can contribute significantly to the cultural diversity of the Washington Metropolitan area by implementing its mission through the effort of all volunteers with your support and sponsorship.
